Shweta Manchanda New Delhi
Ashok B. Lall ashok-behri-lall Ashok Lall, b. 1948, graduated from the University of Cambridge U.K. in Architecture & Fine Arts and obtained the Architectural Association Diploma in 1970. His architectural firm (estd. 1981) is committed to an architectural practice based on the principles of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. The firm has won a number of awards and its work has been published widely. Engaged in architectural education since 1990, he has developed curricula and teaching methods to address environmental issues. He has published many articles and presented papers on environmentally sustainable design and has been an active member of institutions and groups promoting awareness and building competence in sustainable design of buildings. He has been invited to present his work on sustainable design for a developing world at various fora in India and internationally, including UK, Australia, Switzerland, Egypt, London, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Mexico. He was chair of the Jury for the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction, Asia Pacific Region. His current interest is in developing strategies for sustainable urban development in the context of rapid urbanization. Return to Top

Himanshu Burte delhi conference 090 Himanshu Burte (B. Arch, Mumbai University, 1990) has taught and practiced architecture in Mumbai and Goa, and now teaches at School of Habitat Studies (SoHS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. He has written extensively about modern Indian architecture and urban space in India. His first book, ‘Space for Engagement’ (Seagull Books, Kolkata, 2008), has received significant critical acclaim. Burte was a Fulbright Fellow at University of California, Berkeley, and Project for Public Spaces (PPS), New York, over 2008-09 and has spoken at many important institutions and conferences across India and internationally. Burte has been deeply involved in discourse building around architecture and urban issues. Between 1997 and 2002 he co-founded and co-directed the Architecture Forum of the Mohile Parikh Centre for Visual Arts, at NCPA, Mumbai, and organized many national and international workshops and conferences, and published architectural monographs. Burte’s research interests include the public space, contemporary architecture, sustainable built environments, theatre space, housing policy, urban and infrastructural planning, and smaller Indian cities. He is currently co-writing a book on sustainable architectural practices in India, researched on a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Chicago. He is also pursuing a Ph.D. in urban planning from CEPT University, Ahmedabad. Return to Top

Jeeth Iype Jeeth Iype is an eco architect practicing alternative environmental architecture. An alumni of the Academy of Architecture Mumbai he has over 25 years of experience working on group housing, educational, institutional, tourism and health care facilities. With a talent for innovation and translating ideas into architecture, his passion has lead him to research into human behavior in relation to the built environment, organic farming and Permaculture design. After having worked in Auroville in the early years, he co-founded Good Earth, a pioneer in the field of alternative architecture and environment friendly housing since the past 20 years. Good Earth’s attempt has been to create vibrant communities which make one feel psychologically and socially secure, and retain one’s individuality. Having evolved from an NGO to a design built consultancy, the practice has designed and build more than 3 million square foot of eco buildings including the Centre for Learning an alternate school in Bangalore, Sambhavna Clinic, a holistic medicine clinic for the Bhopal Gas victims, ATREE a research centre at Bangalore, Fireflies an eco spiritual ashram at Bangalore Visthar, APSA, APD all social NGO campuses in Bangalore, Adyar Eco Park a eco restoration of an estuary, for the people of Chennai, and GoodEarth Hamlet, Haveli, Hymns of Life, and Orchard. Malini Krishnankutty Malini Krishnankutty is an urban planner based in Mumbai, who has been involved in city planning consultancy, teaching and research. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a double Masters in Architecture and in City Planning. During that time, she had the unique experience of doing a Planning internship with Jaime Lerner in Cutitiba, Brazil. She has always been committed to sustainability in design. After running a small architectural practice in Mumbai, she spends her time entirely as a city planning consultant. She has worked as a consultant on the Chief Minister’s Task Force for the Regional Plan for Goa, RPG-21, on JNNURM projects in Panaji and on the Development Plan and Codes for the Mahableshwar Eco-Sensitive Zone. She has also been active in building a discourse around sustainable architecture and planning issues in India. Sanjay Prakash sanjay-prakash Sanjay Prakash, B. Arch., A.I.I.A., is an architect with a commitment to energy-conscious architecture, eco-friendly design, people’s participation in planning, music and production design. Over the years, he has integrated all his work with the practice of new urbanism and sustainability in his professional and personal life. His area of practice and research over the last 34 years includes passive and low energy architecture and planning, hybrid air-conditioning, autonomous energy and water systems, bamboo and earth construction, community-based design of common property, and computer-aided design. Under his guidance, hundreds of persons have developed capabilities in performing design, conceptual or management work in these areas. He is Principal Consultant of his design firm, SHiFt: Studio for Habitat Futures, and was a partner of DAAT and Studio Plus, firms that predate his current firm. Return to Top
Sathya Prakash Varanashi satya Sathya Prakash Varanashi studied architecture in Bangalore, urban design in Delhi and heritage conservation in England. A former Professor of Architecture, he is involved in academics, outreach activities, freelance writing, professional associations and NGO initiatives. Right from his early days, he was attracted to designs ideas rooted in cost, culture, climate and creativity, thanks to the influence of architects such as Laurie Baker, Shankar Kanade, K. Jaisim, A.G.K. Menon and K.T. Ravindran. His consultancy firm, Sathya Consultants, in Bangalore has been professing and practising eco-friendly cost-effective architecture for the last 15 years. Suhasini Ayer ??????????????????????????????? Suhasini Ayer – Guigan, is a graduate of “Delhi School of Planning and Architecture”; living in Auroville since 1985 and one of the co-founder of the “Auroville Centre for Scientific Research”; an organisation dedicated to research and experimentation in the field of appropriate building materials and technologies, water management, renewable energy and solar passive / climatic architecture and sustainable urban planning. The head the “Auroville Design Consultants”, the Planning and Design wing of this organization, have designed and implemented over 50+ projects in India in the last 25+ years. She was co-recipient of the Hassan Fathy Award for 'Architecture for the Poor' in 1992, co- nominated for the Aga khan in 1992 and recipient of the Design Share Award for educational buildings in 2003 and 2005 Return to Top

Vinod Kumar Gupta vinod-gupta Dr. Vinod Gupta is Fellow of Indian Institute of Architects, partner in the firm Space Design Consultants and Managing Director of the firm Opus Indigo Designs Pvt. Ltd., visiting professor at the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi, member of the Technical Advisory Committee of Griha the National Green Building Rating System, founder member and President of Gubbi Alliance for Sustainable Habitat. He has contributed more than 20 papers on sustainable design, energy efficient building design, solar passive architecture, building automation, office furniture and interior design. He edited the book ‘Energy and Habitat’. His works have been regularly published in various professional journals. He graduated from School of Planning and Architecture in 1969 and obtained his Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi in 1984. He is currently involved in sustainable design projects varying in scale from furniture design to individual buildings, to campus design and urban planning. Return to Top

Shweta Manchanda is Associate Professor of Architecture at the School of Planning & Architecture, New Delhi. She is an architect and environmental designer by training and has received her Bachelors from the School of Planning &Architecture, Delhi and Masters and Doctorate degrees from the Martin Centre, University of Cambridge, UK. She has been involved with practice and teaching as a sustainable design expert, both in India and abroad. She has worked with the family practice of Manchanda Associates at Delhi and with Skidmore Owings & Merrill in Chicago, and has taught at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor  and the RICS, School of Built Environment, Noida, among other engagements. Her project involvements include the sustainability strategy for Mumbai Airport and Jaypee Sports City.  In addition her research work has focused on adaptive comfort in naturally ventilated and mixed mode buildings and has included projects under the Swiss Development Corporation and BEE alliance.
